Barcelona's prized possession, Lionel Messi, has been diagnosed with a thigh bruise and is likely to miss Sunday's Malaga tie.

In what appears to be a major blow for Barcelona, their star striker Lionel Messi has suffered a bruised left thigh, the club has confirmed.

After medical tests held Thursday, Messi was diagnosed with a thigh bruise which might prevent him from playing in Barcelona`s second Spanish league match slated for Sunday against Malaga, reports Xinhua.

The 26-year-old Messi was withdrawn at halftime of Wednesday`s Spanish Super Cup first leg against Atletico Madrid and could not play in the second half, being replaced by Cesc Fabregas.

Barcelona said in a medical report that "Messi was substituted due to precaution for pain in the back of his left thigh caused by a knock."

Barcelona coach Gerard Martino said he didn't think twice about resting Messi.

"If a player feels he has a physical problem that stops him from playing, it makes no sense to leave him on the pitch," Martino said.

Messi had a minor muscle injury in his left leg last week but was cleared in time for Sunday's Spanish league opener and scored two goals in a 7-0 rout of Levante.

Despite the absence of the four-time world player of the year in Wednesday`s match against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona`s new acquisition Neymar scored a goal and the match resulted in a 1-1 draw after former Barcelona player David Villa had scored first.
