21-year-old South African Man Gets World's First Successful Penis Transplant

The world's first successful penis transplant has been done by a surgical team in South Africa. And its lucky recipient is a 21-year-old man whose identity is being protected.<br />
<br />
<b>BBC</b> reports the man had lost his penis in a botched circumcision. He was 18 and already sexually active when he had the circumcision that was part of the transition from boyhood to adulthood in parts of South Africa. Unfortunately, the boy was left with just 1cm of his original penis.<br />
<br />
He received his new penis from a deceased donor, whose family were praised by doctors and surgeons at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital performed the nine-hour operation to attach it.<br />
<br />
One of the surgeons, Andre Van der Merwe, who normally performs kidney transplants, told the BBC News website:<br />

"This is definitely much more difficult, the blood vessels are 1.5 mm wide. In the kidney it can be 1 cm."<br />
The team used some of the techniques that had been developed to perform the first face transplants in order to connect the tiny blood vessels and nerves.<br />

The operation took place on 11 December last year. Three months later, doctors say the recovery has been rapid. Full sensation has not returned and doctors suggest this could take two years. However, the man is able to pass urine, have an erection, orgasm and ejaculate. He is happy and healthy.<br />
<br />
The team said there was extensive discussion about whether the operation, which is not life-saving in the same way as a heart transplant, was ethical. Eventually, after "a hell of a lot of time", they did get the ethical approval. Doctors say South Africa has some of the greatest need for penis transplants anywhere in the world as dozens, although some say hundreds, of boys are maimed or die each year during traditional initiation ceremonies. Further attempts on other patients are expected to take place in three months time.<br />

A 10-year old boy, Callum Higgins has been suffering from a rare disorder which makes him eat on household items. Callum eats anything non-food and can practically eat anything. He eats electrical wires, socks, pencils, washing tablets, his sister’s doll, raw meat from the freezer, name it and Callum can eat it.</div>

It has been a sad experience for his 28-year old mom who also has two other children living normal lives. Callum is her first child and she has been managing him for 10years since she had him when she was 18.</div>

Now that he has grown older and taller, it has been more difficult to manage him because he has the opportunity of moving around and chewing on stuffs at will. Though Callum can eat a normal food, he still prefers non-food because of his rare disorder.</div>

If you ask me, now these are the kind of people that needs a MIRACLE. A miracle to start eating healthy food and not household items.</div>

The Federal government says the highly transmittable avian influenza viral disease also known as Bird flu has spread to five more states asides Lagos and Kaduna where the first cases were recorded in Nigeria. The states with the latest cases of the disease in poultry animals include Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Edo and Plateau states.<br />
                         Speaking at a press conference today in Abuja, the Minister of Agriculture, Akinwunmi Adeshina said 15 commercial farms and 9 live bird Markets have been affected by the disease in the five states.<br />
He stated that the disease has not reached an epidemic state in Nigeria and that everything is being done to contain its spread in the country.<br />
"We are not in a state of any epidemic. Seven states have so far reported cases of the bird flu – Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Edo and Plateau States. The most affected state has been Kano, where the initial case of the bird flu was found. In all of these states, different levels of interventions, including depopulation, decontamination and quarantine are currently ongoing.” he said 103,445 birds have reportedly been exposed to the infection in Kano State, with 15,963 (15 per cent) mortality reported, while 31,195 and 3,347 (11%) mortality has been reported in Lagos State.<br />

Not Again!, A British national residing in Sierra Leone has tested positive to the deadly Ebora virus. According to a statement released by the British Department of Health, medical experts were assessing the situation 'to ensure that appropriate care is delivered". The statement also added that Consular assistance is being provided to the Briton.<br />

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health, Professor John Watson said;<br />
"The overall risk to the public in the UK continues to be very low. Medical experts are currently assessing the situation in Sierra Leone to ensure that appropriate care is provided. We have robust, well-developed and well-tested NHS systems for managing unusual infectious diseases when they arise, supported by a wide range of experts."<br />

He said it was the state government that now intervened and rushed the victim to the hospital, where he was given medical attention.<br />
Fasubaa revealed that the corps member blood sample was taken and sent to the National laboratory in Lagos for examination. He said the test result which later came in from the National laboratory declared the victim Ebola-free.<br />
<br />
The commissioner said the young man was lucky to be alive as he could have died from non-attention by the healthcare personnel at the orientation camp.<br />
Fasubaa further explained that for anybody to have EVD he /she would have travelled to infectious area or had contact with an infected person, and after 2-21 days of such contact, the person would develop the symptoms of fever, intense weakness, bone and muscular pains, which would later progress to vomiting, diarrhea and organ damage.<br />
<br />
He urged the state doctors to live up to their responsibilities and remember the Hippocratic oath they took, and stressed that not all patients that have fever or vomiting is Ebola carrier.<br />
The deadly virus was first recorded in 1976 after an outbreak in Zaire now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was brought to Nigeria by the late Ameriac-Liberian, Patrick Sawyer.  It would be recalled that a Nigerian woman last week died at the United Arab Emirate (UAE) on suspicion of Ebola virus after showing symptoms related to the disease.<br />

How Ebola Virus Disease Came To Our Door - First Consultants Hospital

Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, the Nigerian physician who died in Lagos this week, was mistakenly exposed to the Ebola Virus Disease at the First Consultants Medical Center in Ikoyi where she worked and attended to Patrick Sawyer, the patient who brought EVD into the country. But she was heroically instrumental to preventing a massive outbreak in the country, an effort she paid for with her life last Tuesday.<br />
<br />
A statement she co-authored with Dr. B.N. Ohiaeri before her death explained how Mr. Sawyer was first diagnosed with malaria upon his arrival on the night of July 20.  Here is the text of the statement by First Consultants Medical Center Ltd.<br />
In the interest of our patients, staff, the general public the nation at large we state the following:<br />
<br />
A 40-years old gentlemen came into the hospital with symptoms suggestive of Malaria (fever, headache, extreme weakness) on Sunday night (20th July 2014). He was fully conscious and gave us his clinical history and told us he is a Senior Diplomat from Liberia. Laboratory investigations confirmed malaria whilst other test for HIV, Hepatitis B&C were negative. He was admitted and treatment commenced.<br />
<br />
However, due to the fact that he was not responding to treatment but rather was developing haemorrhagic symptoms we further questioned him. He denied having been in contact with any persons with EVD (Ebola Virus Disease) at home, in any hospital or at any burial.<br />
<br />
In spite of this denial we immediately decided to do the following:<br />
<br />
1. To conduct further tests for possible Infectious Haemorrhagic Disease, especially EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE, based on the fact that he was a Liberian citizen and the recent outbreak of EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE in that country.<br />
<br />
2. We immediately isolated/quarantined the patient, commenced barrier nursing and simultaneously contacted the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Health to enquire where further laboratory tests could be performed as we had a high index of suspicion of possible EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE<br />
<br />
3. WE REFUSED FOR HIM TO BE LET OUT OF THE HOSPITAL IN SPITE OF INTENSE PRESSURE, AS WE WERE TOLD THAT HE WAS A SENIOR ECOWAS OFFICIAL AND HAD AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO PLAY AT THE ECOWAS CONVENTION IN CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE.<br />
<br />
4. The initial test results from LUTH laboratory indicated a signal of possible EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE, but required confirmation.<br />
<br />
5. We then took the further step of reaching out to Senior Officials in the office of the Secretary of Health of the United States of America who promptly assisted us with contacts at the centres for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organisation Regional Laboratory Centre in Senegal.<br />
<br />
6. Working jointly with the State, Federal Agencies and International Agencies, we were able to obtain confirmation of EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (ZAIRE STRAIN), (W.H.O. Regional Center Lab-Senegal/Redeemes lab/LUTH Laboratory)<br />
<br />
7. The gentleman subsequently died on Friday at a 6.50 (25th July, 2014)<br />
<br />
8. All agencies were promptly notified and in consultation with W.H.O, Regional EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE Centre in Conakry, Guinea and Best Practices, the following was commenced: <br />

Ekiti State Government has debunked rumours of an outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in the state .This came as the government lamented the unfortunate death of a woman, who was said to have vomited and collapsed in premises of the State Ministry of Health and was rejected in four different private hospitals because of the text messages circulated by some unidentified people suspected to be in the Healthcare sector that tagged her ebola patient.<br />

At a briefing, Commissioner for Health, Professor Olusola Fasubaa said....<br />

On 20th August,2014, a 55-year-old health care worker at Ogotun- Ekiti, who was said not to have had any complaints of illness in the last two months and no current history of travel outside the state (according to her neighbours) got to the Data Bank of the Ministry of Health at about 1.pm and collapsed after coughing out blood and subsequently vomited and she was immediately tagged Ebola victim without an adequate history taken and people started running away.<br />
“The woman subsequently died in the late evening. The unnecessary write-up through the social media by some doctors in the state is uncalled for, and counter-productive to the efforts of the state government in containing and curtailing the spread of the virus.”<br />
<br />
He also said a similar case at the NYSC Orientation camp in Ise Ekiti where a young man who had been inadequately treated for malaria collapsed and was abandoned by everybody including the camp’s healthcare givers from 6am to 3pm when the state government intervened.<br />
<br />
Prof Fasubaa appealed to doctors in the state to live up to their responsibilities and remember the Hippocratic oath they swore to. He stressed that not all patients that have fever or vomiting have Ebola.<br />

In response to the open letter written by blogger Peace Ben Williams and yesterday, Patrick Sawyer's wifey, Decontee, has out sent an apology to Nigerians.<br />
In a mail exclusively sent to Peace Ben Williams, hours ago, she said thus:<br />

Hello my dear sister. Are you the same Peace Ben Williams that wrote me an open letter stating the magnitude of Patrick’s actions on Nigeria?<br />
If so, I want to thank you for your letter. I took the time to read it, and it really opened my eyes. You see, my dear, Patrick and I have been separated (not yet divorced) for the past one year and seven months. He left me when I was seven months pregnant with our third child. We already had a 3-year-old, and a 4-year-old together, with a third on the way.<br />
He left us all and started a new family in Liberia. I was left by myself to now raise three children alone, one of which (my 3-year-old at the time) was diagnosed with autism. That in itself was a challenge (and still is). Patrick left us, and he never turned back. We only communicated occasionally regarding our children.<br />
<br />
I was under so much emotional stress during my labor that I almost lost my last child, Bella. Thank God she is now a healthy 18months old girl. Patrick and I now have a 6yr old, a 5yr old, and an 18months old together (all girls). He and his mistress have a 2-year-old daughter together in Liberia. They lived together in the house that he and I built together. Can you believe the idiot named the child he had with his mistress after me?<br />
<br />
The man was deeply confused and troubled. So, my dear, my letter I wrote was not to defend my husband (the man that abandoned me with two small children while I was pregnant for the third). My letter was to shine light on the beyond broken healthcare system and bad governance of Liberia under President Sirleaf and previous presidents. Ebola didn’t start with Patrick in Liberia, as we both know. Ebola was in Liberia from a traveler from Guinea since February of this year. The government knew about it and did nothing. Many Liberians, including myself, called out to the government then to close the borders. They didn’t do so until one of their own, Patrick, died in July.<br />

Many people died before Patrick and their lives were just as important. That is my frustration. Ebola didn’t have to go to Nigeria, Africa’s most populated country, had the Liberian government taken drastic actions sooner. I too, have family members and friends in Nigeria, and now they are at risk because of Patrick’s actions. In spite of my anger and disappointment with him, I don’t believe that he did this with evil intent (I could be wrong). I believe his actions was that of a desperate man. And sad for everyone involved, Nigeria was closer than the U.S. This is just my take on what he could have been thinking (of course, I could be wrong).<br />
<br />
My regret is that I was so caught up in my own pain and frustration, that I neglected to see the pain of the innocent people both in Liberia and Nigeria who are affected by Patrick’s actions. For that, I am deeply sorry. The last thing I wanted to do was to cause them pain. It is a pain I know. It is a pain I don’t want them to have. The interesting thing is, I didn’t even know Patrick was in Nigeria until my sister living in Boston (USA) told me the day before he died.<br />
Patrick barely talked with me. He was too busy being a Liberian government big shot. Power, if not used to glorify God, can bring down a nation. It brought down my family. I finally had a lawyer in Liberia serve Patrick with divorce papers exactly a week before he died. He never signed it. Now I’m left as his widow taking the heat while his mistress sits in peace. I just read your open letter this morning.<br />

Below is an open letter I [Decontee] wrote last week after I wrote my first letter:<br />
I cannot apologize for Patrick’s actions because I didn’t cause them. He did a lot of things I didn’t like; going to Nigeria was one of them. His act was one of a desperate man. Many Nigerians and Liberians are affected because of that act of desperation.<br />
<br />
I want to reach out to them and express how deeply saddened and sorry I am for their loss and their pain. I do apologize if my words have cost anyone who is grieving more pain. I fall on my knees and ask God for his healing power for all of those who are still infected with Ebola. I pray for all of the families who loved ones were taken away by this merciless killer Ebola, especially those affected by Patrick’s actions.<br />
<br />
I pray for the people of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. I pray for the people of Africa. We are all affected by Ebola. It will take all of us working together to eradicate Ebola. Ebola must go, and we must kick it out together. The God in me wouldn’t allow me to go and hide. He strengthens me to stay and fight. I’m fighting to help bring aid to my brothers and sisters in Africa. I am committed to this fight. But I cannot do it by myself. I need all of your help.<br />
The good people of the world, not just Africa, need to come together, and fight together. We can either do it together and win, or we can tear each other down and loose. This is not just my fight, or Africa’s fight. This is the world’s fight.<br />

According to CKN who watched the program, a Senior Registrar with Igbobi Orthopaedic hospital, Lagos, Dr Akindele Akintayo revealed this morning on a TV programme that another Liberian have also been detected with the deadly Ebola virus in Lagos, Nigeria.<br />

Dr. Akintayo said on the programme that the Liberian has been kept at the IDH in Lagos and could not confirm if the new case had a contact with late Mr Sawyer or not. More on this later...<br />

Yes, unfortunately it's true. Just confirmed from a family source. Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, the Senior Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist who was one of the doctors who attended to Patrick Sawyer at First Consultant Hospital has died from the Ebola virus which she contracted from Sawyer.<br />
<br />
Dr. Ameyo died this afternoon Tuesday August 19th at the isolation centre in Lagos where she'd been quarantined. She died a hero because she was the doctor who refused to let Patrick Sawyer, the man who brought the Ebola virus to Nigeria, leave the hospital when he attempted to leave. She saved many lives by doing this.<br />
<br />
She's survived by a son and her husband. May her beautiful soul rest in peace...amen.<br />

The Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) has confirmed the death of a 35-year-old Nigerian woman at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The women, who was suffering from advanced metastatic cancer was travelling from Nigeria to India for treatment, when her condition deteriorated at a transit stop in Abu Dhabi. Despite immediate medical assistance, she could not be saved, said the Authority in a statement.<br />
<br />
The traveller had shown signs that may be consistent with the Ebola virus infection; however Haad stated that her existing medical condition provided an adequate medical explanation for her death: “Full safety and precautionary measures have been taken by the medical staff who attended the patient according to the World Health Organisation standards for dealing with suspected cases of infectious diseases. In addition, all contacts of the patient (her husband and the 5 medics who took care of her on site) are in isolation pending the result of Ebola testing on the patient. They are all well with no symptoms.”<br />
<br />
The Ministry of Health assures the public that there is no risk to the community, to fellow passengers on the plane from Nigeria and those in the airport.<br />

Lagos state Governor Babatunde Fashola remarked:<br />
“This is a virus that will run a maximum of 21 days. What we must do is people who show some signs of illness should come in very early so that we can continue to hydrate them, give electrolyte balance so that their nervous system do not go into shock and wherever it is necessary to provide antibiotics for patients; and their body can fight the virus which in the event last no longer than 21 days.”<br />
Fashola, who spoke at a media briefing where he indicated that more patients were likely to be discharged this week, noted:<br />
“There is silver lining in all of this, as report reaching me shows that many of the critical patients are responding positively to treatment and are likely to be discharged next week, (this week).<br />
<br />
“At the moment, 61 people have been certified negative and they have been freed.<br />
<br />
“Aside the treatment for those who have full grown cases, the more important work is tracking all those who have had contact with them in order to know how far the virus has spread. It is when we have finally reach everyone that we can say that we have control over the virus. From that place we can go back to sleep.”<br />

The Minister of Health in Nigeria, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, says the first Nigerian Ebola patient declared fit and discharged from hospital.<br />

Professor Chukwu told journalists in Lagos on Saturday that the patient, whose identity has not been revealed, was asked to go home after all the necessary medical examinations were carried out.<br />

“The total number of Ebola cases now stands at 12, while the number of deaths remains four.<br />
<br />
<br />
The people under surveillance in Lagos is now 189, while six are in Enugu, in southeast Nigeria,” Professor Chukwu said.<br />
<br />
The minister also announced that the drug, Nano Silva, which was thought could be used to treat Ebola patients in Nigeria, was said not to have met the requirements of the National Health Research ethics code.<br />

His statement is coming two days after the death of a fourth Ebola patient was reported.<br />
<br />
In an effort to contain the spread of the virus, the Lagos State government had provided an isolation unit to accommodate persons who tested positive to the virus.<br />

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), yesterday, said cases of the Ebola virus may escalate in the country as majority of the health personnel working on the management, monitoring and surveillance have been sacked.<br />
<br />
NMA warned about the risk of the deadly virus spreading at an alarming rate following the sack of 16,000 resident doctors, most of whom were said to be involved in the move to contain the virus.<br />
<br />
The NMA said the doctors, although on strike, had made their services available to government in the bid to combat Ebola.<br />
<br />
The association vowed not to resume talks with government until it unconditionally reverses the sack of the doctors.<br />
<br />
The Chairman, Lagos State branch of the NMA, Dr Tope Ojo, who disclosed the association’s stand in Lagos, yesterday, said all attempts by government to divide the NMA would be resisted by the association.<br />
<br />
“This sack action must have proven the unrepentant hatred of Mr. President and the Federal Government for doctors, considering that since this current regime, several unions have embarked on industrial actions for even longer periods, that witnessed several failed negotiations too, before eventual resolution and same punitive actions were never applied,” the NMA said at a press conference.<br />
<br />
The body, however, urged its members to keep volunteering in the management of Ebola.<br />
<br />
“This would further worsen the current Ebola scourge because a large majority of volunteers involved in case management and other levels of the Ebola Emergency Response Committee are resident doctors,” Ojo said.<br />
<br />
“However, we will continue to participate in the Ebola Response as we have been doing, in spite of the purported sack, so as not to become insensitive to the plight of Nigerians like the Federal Government is demonstrating presently”.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Lagos State government, yesterday, said there was no death of any person infected with Ebola at the Alimosho General Hospital, Igando or any of its hospitals, as rumoured across several media.<br />
<br />
In a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Lateef Ibirogba, the state government dispelled the rumour making the rounds that an Ebola infected person had died at the government owned hospital in Alimosho.<br />
<br />
He said the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, addressed the issue during the last Ebola update press briefing, where he assured residents of Lagos that the hospital was safe and medically sound for them to patronize.<br />
<br />
As part of the measures to contain the spread of Ebola, the state government, through the Ministry of the Environment, (MOE), also yesterday, trained about 800 health workers and volunteers in all the 57 local governments and local council development areas on preventive measures.<br />
<br />
Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, who made the disclosure at a sensitisation campaign tagged: “Train the trainers’ Educative programme”, also said that government would not hesitate to invoke any relevant section of the laws on anyone who flouts the environmental laws.<br />
<br />
The commissioner warned residents to desist from unsafe and unhealthy practices so as not to contract EVD, urging them not to attempt hiding persons with suspected symptoms of Ebola as government has the right to quarantine or isolate such persons to prevent the disease from spreading.<br />

One of the health workers who attended to Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer has suffered a decline in her condition.<br />
<br />
Reports have it that the female doctor, Dr. Adadevoh, who was a senior consultant at the First Consultant Hospital in Obalende, where Sawyer was diagnosed of Ebola, has fallen into a coma.<br />
<br />
A source at the quarantine facility in Lagos revealed:<br />

“She is in a bad shape, her condition really deteriorated today. But the other seven are responding to treatment.<br />
<br />
The doctor was one of the 44 people who had primary contact with Sawyer, 2 of whom have already died.<br />
<br />
