The Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo has been closed down indefinitely following the inability of the government to meet the demands of its staff union including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU),  Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Academic Staff Union (NASU).<br />
<br />
Some of the demands of the staff unions include:  the appointment of an acting vice-chancellor to preside over the convocation that would have been held last week and right the wrong allegedly done by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa’s including the victimisation of its members, withdrawal of certificates of lecturers and abuse of due process by the university’s management.<br />
<br />
The closure, according to reports, might not be unconnected with the crises that had been rocking the 30-year-old institution with the unions being at loggerheads with the VC over several issues.<br />
<br />
It had also passed a vote-of-no-confidence on him several months ago.<br />
Last week, staff unions, including the SSANU and NASU, had staged a mass protest where Obafunwa was successfully booted out.<br />
<br />
During the protest at the institution’s campus in Ojo, Obafunwa, who gained entrance with the aid of security officials, was chased out with sachet of  water  thrown at him.<br />

ASUU Set To Embark On Another Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be going on another very long strike just a year after they called off their 5-month long strike, following the Federal Government inability to honour the agreement it reached with the lecturers during the last strike.<br />
<br />
Speaking yesterday at a press briefing in remembrance of the killing of former ASUU leader, Professor Festus Iyayi by the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, ASUU lamented the failure of the Federal Government to fulfill its promises.<br />
<br />
The union disclosed that no government-owned university had received a dime from the N200 billion the government said it had set aside for the revitalization of university education in the current year.<br />
Chairman, Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch of ASUU, Comrade Dennis Aribidor said: “It seems Iyayi’s death opened the pandora box that suggests that ASUU’s relationship with government might seem irreconcilably hostile.<br />
<br />
While he fought for a just cause, ASUU is presently skeptical that he died in vain especially since the contention over honouring the ASUU-FG 2009 agreement, which cut his life short, is still far-fetched. This position is based on some hard truths.”<br />

Ogun State Postpones School Resumption Over Ebola

The Ogun State Government yesterday announced the indefinite postponement of the resumption date for all primary and secondary schools in the state. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Segun Odubela, made this known in a press statement where he attributed the postponement to the deadly Ebola disease.<br />
<br />
“Due to the current global health challenge occasioned by the deadly Ebola disease, the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has postponed the resumption date for all public and private primary and secondary schools earlier scheduled for September 15, 2014 to a date to be announced later,” the commissioner said.<br />

Students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, are currently protesting in the state, demanding a reduction in their school fees. The students have barricaded the Presidential boulevard, the route leading to the office of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, saying they will not leave until the governor, who is said to be on his way to his office, addresses them.<br />

The students were reportedly shot at and tear-gassed by soldiers this morning as they marched to the Governors office. After being tear-gassed, angry students started destroying public property. The aggrieved students are demanding a further reduction in their school fees days after Governor Amosun announced a reduction in school fees and said it would take effect from next academic session.<br />

The students of the state owned school say they are not satisfied with the reduction, as it's still too high and they want the new school fees to take effect from the current academic session.<br />

Gov. Babatunde Raji Fashola today announced the reversal of the Lagos State University which was recently increased to N350,000 to the old rate of N25,000.<br />

The governor announced this at the 19th convocation ceremony of the higher degree award in Lagos which took place today. Student present at the convocation were said to have screamed with joy and started dancing round the whole school, jubiliating the decrease.<br />

The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) has arrested the above named internet fraudsters who specialized in designing organisation’s websites and using same to defraud unsuspecting members of the society.<br />
<br />
A petition dated 22nd August 2013, received from OPEC FUND for International Development alleged that a website designed as “OFID Scholarship Website” with OFID name and logo has been used to defraud innocent Nigerian applicants. That in the website, applicants were required to pay N2,500.00 as an application fee and over 2,000 applicants responded and paid the fees through the First Bank Account Number 2020874607 and Access Bank Account Number 0056941009 with the name OFID WSAS NG. The petitioner stated further that it was one of the victims that contacted OFID via facebook, accusing OFID of being complicit in the fraud.<br />
<br />
The Cybercrime Section of the Unit swung into action and the mastermind of the fraud, one Falade Oluwapelumi Ayotunde was arrested. His arrest led to the arrest of five other syndicate members. Police investigation so far revealed that over 2,000 applicants paid the sum of N2,500.00 each into the two banks provided by the suspects and the principal suspect is the only signatory to both accounts.<br />
<br />
<b>[1] FALADE OLUWAPELUMI AYOTUNDE</b> - A 25years old from Akure, Ondo State and 500Level Estate Management student of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). The suspect made a confessional statement, that he designed the website of OFID WSAS (OPEC Fund for International Development for World Student Aid Scholarship) in June, 2012. That the idea came from one Fajobi Olalekan and Bolatiri Opemipo. He also admitted that he opened an account in both First Bank and Access Bank with the name OFID WSAS NG for applicants to pay in their application fee which many responded to. He further stated that he and his cohorts printed a postal for OFIDWAS which was on the website.<br />
<br />
<b>[2] ASAOLU VICTOR</b> – 25years old from Ilesha in Osun State and a graduate of Mining Engineering from Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). A job seeker, He confessed that he assisted to paste the posters on line and he was given N80,000.00 initially and later another N40,000.00 totaling N120,000.00 for the job.<br />
<br />
<b>[3] AWOTE TEMITOPE EMMANUEL</b> – 27years old. A 500Level Estate Management student of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). He confessed that he assisted the principal suspect to sign guarantor for the accounts he opened in First Bank and Access Bank for the OFID program and was paid N70,000.00 which he had spent for his personal effects. He stated that he participated in pasting and publicizing the fake OFID Scholarship Program. He also stated that he knew from the onset that the OFID Scholarship Program is a scam aimed at defrauding innocent scholarship applicant but that he still went on to deceive the bank that his friend is honest and the program genuine.<br />
<br />
<b>[4] FAJOBI OLALEKAN</b> is 27years old from Lagos State and a Mechanical Engineering graduate of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) with a first class honour and the best graduating student in his department for the year 2012. He is currently working with Dee Xecutor Concept. He stated that while in school, he lived in the same Lodge with the 1st suspect and his mates/friends always come to him for educational assistance because of his intelligence. That he once fell victim for scholarship known as EDIADS, which made the 1st suspect to approach him and got some information regarding that one, which he believed gave him an idea on how to design OFID Scholarship Website. He further stated that he lent the 1st suspect the sum N12,000.00 for hosting the Website. He later gave him N20,000.00 in return and informed him that the fraud was successful.<br />
<br />
<b>[5] BOLATIRI EMMANUEL ONAOPEMIPO</b> is 25years old from Oyo State. A graduate of FUTA. He is currently a Handset Dealer. He corroborated Fajobi Olalekan’s statement that they applied for scholarship while in school which turned out to be fake and they shared their experiences with the 1st suspect which gave him an idea on how to design his own fake Website with OFID name/logo. He also stated that he lent him the sum of N8,000.00 and was later paid N12,000.00 with interest.<br />
<br />
<b>[6] ADEBOMI OLUWATOSIN </b>– 26years old and a graduate of FUTA. He is currently working with Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro as a Programmer II. According to him, he offered professional advice to the 1st suspect and lent him the sum of N10,000.00 and was later given N100,000.00 as his own share. He confessed that he knew from the onset that it was fraud aimed at defrauding innocent applicants, since there was no authority from OFID.<br />
<br />
Investigation is on-going. Suspects will be charged to court soonest. The Commissioner of Police, Police Special Fraud Unit, CP Umar F. Idris advises the general public to verify the genuineness of any on-line advert before parting with their money. He also uses this medium to invite the affected victims to Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) No. 13, Milverton Road, Ikoyi – Lagos in furtherance of the investigation.<br />

Yes!! All Polytechnics can collectively breathe a sigh of relief as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have finally suspended the nationwide strike which has been on since October last year.<br />
This piece of good news was made public this morning by the National Publicity Secretary of the Union, Clement Chirman who added that all schools are expected to re-open by Tuesday next week for academic activities.<br />
<br />
The decision to end the 10-month old strike was made at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union held in Abuja.<br />
This meeting is following another one which the Union had with the new Minister of Education and former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau which was generally described as “fruitful”.<br />
<br />
Thank God oh.. to stay at home for 10 months plus aint easy! Happy for you guys, please pass this message across<br />

There was fire outbreak yesterday at Awolowo Hall at about 11pm, thank God for the Match between Argentina and Holland as there not much people around; all the students went to the Post Graduate hall to watch the match.<br />
<br />
Awo block 7 was affected, there was no water within the hall because of the on-going strike in the school but the OAU fire fighters eventually put out the fire which had already done its damage.<br />
<br />
The cause of the fire is unknown but some of the students around are pointing hands at the authority, they said its their plot to send all the remaining students on campus home.<br />

A Unilag final year student of Philosophy simply known as Sapara was on Monday shot at the school premises by unknown gunmen who were said to be inside a moving car. His head was the target but the shot slightly missed him and bruised his head.<br />

Sapara was immediately rushed to LUTH where he is said to be in a stable condition. Eyewitnesses after running helter-skelter say, the men where in a moving vehicle and sped off immediately they shot at him.<br />

A Student who goes by the name Tolani Ajayi, the 21-year-old undergraduate who recently killed his father, has explained why he hacked his father to death.<br />
<br />
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday at the Eleweran Police Headquarters, Abeokuta, Tolani stated that he hacked his father, a lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria to death, because he angered him. Tolani said his father provoked him by beating him with a stick; and that he needs no help from Nigerians.<br />
PremiumTimes reports that Tolani said:<br />
There is no way Nigerians can help me. I am going to face my judgement. I am meant to pay for what I have done. It is not as if I am ready, it is something that is inevitable –<br />
something that is going to happen; I am just waiting for it.”<br />
<br />
The suspect, however, said his action may be “spiritual.” He said he regretted it and had sent emissaries to his widowed mother, begging for her forgiveness.<br />
“My mother is still grieving. I have sent some people to talk to her that I am sorry. I want to give her time. I have talked to my sister. I have asked for forgiveness,” he said.<br />
<br />
When asked whether he had been under the influence of drugs, the suspect confessed that he took drugs but denied being under the influence on the day of the murder. He said his action was not planned.<br />
“The incident happened around 1 a.m. when the church would have been sleeping by then. It was anger that led me to this. There was an argument between us and I stood up to him. He beat me with a stick and bit me with his teeth repeatedly. Just the two of us were at home; my mother was in Abuja.”<br />
Tolani said his father was the one that first went to the kitchen to get a wooden spoon which he used to hit him repeatedly. He confessed that he actually used a kitchen knife and cutlass to attack his father.<br />
“I tried to defend myself, then he bit me on my shoulder and I got angry. I used normal small kitchen knife then I used a cutlass to attack him. I regret the action,” the young man said.<br />
<br />
Tolani said that his family resides in Abuja while he lived at the Redeemed Church, RCCG, camp.<br />
“My father came for a programme; then, my school was on break so I went to meet him. We were meant to go back to Abuja together then the incident happened and I am here,” he said.<br />
He told journalists that contrary to previous reports, the altercation was not based on his church attendance.<br />
“I didn’t miss church throughout this semester. I never missed church for once. It is not about the church.”<br />

A 21-year old university undergraduate, Tolani Ajayi, has reportedly killed his father, chopped the body to pieces, before dumping the remains in a bush near their home in Ogun State. And according to PREMIUM TIMES, the attack occurred on Tuesday after an argument between Tolani and his father, Charles Ajayi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN.<br />
<br />
The late lawyer had reportedly questioned his son over his attitude and refusal to follow Biblical teachings and slapped him during the confrontation. The suspect, a 300-level student of the Department of History and International Relations at Redeemer University, RCCG Camp, Ogun State, became infuriated and retaliated by stabbing his father with a knife. He then hacked the body to pieces, packed the mutilated corpse in a box and dumped it in a nearby bush.<br />
<br />
The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident said it occurred at the Redemption Camp along the  Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. He told PremiumTimes:<br />
“The shattered body of Barrister Charles Ajayi, 60, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was seen and recovered in a nearby bush at Canaanland Street in the RCCG Camp, in a box after he had been killed by his son.”<br />
He also said Tolani, the suspect, was arrested at his father’s home after the corpse was discovered. That the Divisional Police Officer of Redemption Camp, Olaiya Martins, had led a team of detectives and some members of the community to where the body was found. The community members had earlier noticed the strange attitude of the suspect while he dumped the box.<br />
<br />
Following the drag marks made by the box, police officers traced the suspect to his home. Mr. Adejobi said upon interrogation, the suspect lied that his father had gone on evangelism. He later confessed to the crime. Exhibits, including the knife and cutlass the suspect used in the attack, were recovered by the police while the corpse had been deposited at a morgue in Sagamu.<br />

Mr. Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, had sent a team of detectives, led by the officer in charge of the Homicide section of the Department of Criminal Investigation, Eleweran Abeokuta, to assess the situation and take over the matter for further investigation and necessary action.<br />

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has been closed down indefinitely following days of students' protest over increase in their school fees which was the introduced in May.  After protesting for days which also continued this morning when UNILAG students shut down the gates leading into the school and all academic activities, with some of them also occupying the senate building, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic & Research, Prof. Babajide Alo immediately pronounced a reversal of the hiked fees for course registration, and other charges, described as unacceptable by the protesting students this morning.<br />

He also said the imposition of various charges on students to register separately for General Studies (GST) courses which they also protested be reversed.<br />
<br />
The increased charges from N10, 000 for late registration of courses, to N25, 000, were also immediately reversed and asked students who have made payments for some of these to approach their faculty officers with teller evidence for a refund.<br />

UniAbuja Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Problems With Vice-Chancellor

UniAbuja lecturers today began an indefinite strike over what they termed misappropriation of funds and misuse of power by the Vice-Chancellor of the university.<br />
<br />
According to one of them, Ben Ugheoke, funds allocated to the institution were being misappropriated and the Vice-Chancellor, James Adelabu, was misusing power. He alleged that the vice-chancellor deliberately refused to pay their teaching, marking, supervision and professional allowances dating back to 2010.<br />
<br />
He told journalists today, that the strike will continue till their appropriate dues are paid and when things get back to shape in the university.<br />

Cutting all craps and going straight to the point, avoiding every form of side attractions and putting on hold every form of sentiments I might have had and may still have for you, I consider it sad, absurd and utterly inadequate the reasons you gave as regard the outrageous and unfair increment in the school fees, save some few.</div>

    <i>"Just to let you know sir, I am writing this letter based on what is known, obvious and crystal clear from reliable and confirmed sources – such as the press, distinguished members of the student’s union and their likes. I have been disappointed so far on how you have not been able to sustain at least a particular reason for your action. The reasons so far have become chameleonic in nature, changing with seasons and interviews that suites its purpose. First it was that our fees are ridiculous because of how cheap they were, then onto the university being underfunded; the most recent reason, the one blaming the increment on the high inflation rate didn’t even make any attempt to drive the nail in. Please sir, kindly make up your mind and carry us along with the real motive(s) behind the sudden increment in the school fees.  The next set of reason(s) I await, as I am sure can be reasoned out if weighed properly.</i></div>

<i>    I am not against an increment in school fees, as long as it is proper, rational and realistic. The absurdness and percentage of the increase is nothing to write home about. The heat of whatever the management is facing should not and cannot be taken out on innocent students who fought their way through the tough admission process. That is why it is called a federal university dutifully under a federal ministry of education. I believe strongly that anything whatsoever pertaining to the running and management of the university should be taken out on the ministry, not on the students who can barely afford a credible accommodation, one of human basic needs, in an academic year.</i></div>

<i>    I plead that you listen to the likes of Senator Omisore, The Ooni of Ife and other influential personnel, who have strongly condemned and advice against this increment. The poor deserves quality education too. With this unjust increment in school fees, you’ll only add to the number of dropouts some of whom are trying to fight their way back into the higher institution. Education is for the masses and the unfair decision you spearheaded and suddenly made known to us few weeks to the start of a new session must not deprive those who are ready to get educated the chance to.</i></div>

<i>    The students are not ready to back down from the current struggle. Those who can afford it and those who can’t –  we are all in this together. It is important you realize that not all student have Samsung galaxy tabs like you said, those fancy cars you see on campus are few in number compared to the population of the students. We cannot because of the luxury of a few conclude or make decisions that affects the generality of the population, most of whom who live from “hand to mouth.” Everything just seems wrong and awkward– the fees, the timing, the reasons and so on. Need I remind you, the LASU struggle is still on and getting out of hand – I don’t pray same in our case!</i></div>

<i>    Therefore, I beseech you sir to restructure, re-plan, re-strategize and reorganize whatever it is you can lay hands on to ensure a fair and just academic year. If the fees were this high during your undergraduate days, Nigeria will not be where it is today as many prospects will be on the street jobless now. Most of our Great Ife alumni, who indeed have the ability to head a family and run a home, have the affordability and professionalism of the university to thank. Great Ife is indeed great; a lot of things contribute to this greatness, the most spectacular being that the child of a common man can get the same or even better education the rich claims to be chasing as a result of them looking down on us. Please maintain our greatness and don’t take OAU away from us. Great Ife lives on!"</i></div>

NECO Releases 2013 Nov/Dec Result, See Nigerian Students' Performance

According to the Registrar and Chief Executive of National Examination 
Council, Professor Promise Nwachukwu Okpala,  who announced the release 
of the result at the Headquarters of NECO in Minna, this latest result 
showed a marked improvement over that of 2012.<br />
<br />
Prof. Okpala disclosed that out of a total of 61,897 candidates 
registered for the examination,  30,000 candidates secured credit and 
above in eight subjects including English and Mathematics which 
represent about 48.77 percent.<br />
<br />
He also Registrar expressed delight at the drastic reduction in 
malpractice in the last year’s November /December examination which 
recorded only 0.14 percent.<br />
<br />
 “The low level of malpractice is an eloquent testimony of the 
painstaking efforts the council has consistently made to eradicate 
examination malpractice,” the Registrar said.<br />
<br />
Okpala stated that the examination body will do everything humanly 
possible towards ensuring that it record zero malpractice in the coming 
years.<br />
<br />
It could be recalled that a total of 21,274 malpractice cases were 
recorded across the country during the 2012 NECO examinations.</div>
