As Frank Lampard sets out to claim that landmark
100th international cap, his national team captain
Steven Gerrard has praised the midfielder for
rejecting a lucrative offer to move to MLS giants
LA Galaxy and keep himself in the Premier League
where he continues to play at the highest level.
Gerrard believes that a money-minded US move
would have rocked Lampard’s international
career, especially at a time when the midfielder
has re-found his scoring boots.
Speaking ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier
against Ukraine on Tuesday, Gerrard said, “Of
course he made the right choice. He was too good
for LA Galaxy in my opinion. Everyone saw how
good he was at the end of last season for Chelsea.
Of course I would have supported his decision if he
had decided to go to LA Galaxy, but for me he still
had a lot to offer in the Premier League and
certainly for England.”
Should Lampard’s head have been turned by LA
Galaxy, the bulk of the blame would rest with
Chelsea, who stalled on a new contract even as
he ran down the final months of his contract at
Stamford Bridge. After the 35 year-old broke the
club’s goalscoring record in sublime fashion, the
club were hard pressed to offer him a new deal,
although the January transfer window was
certainly a testing one for the England
international.
