The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been urged to ensure that the upcoming 2015 presidential elections will be free from the controversies surrounding the Anambra Governorship election.
The Tax Payers Association of Nigeria, TAPAN, making this call, expressed concerns with the allegations that trailed the recent election.
Phillip Ilokhulo, president of the body, also asked INEC in its statement on Tuesday to ensure proper handling of the review of voters register, which should be done in order to eliminate cases of missing names.
TAPAN decried calls for cancellation of the Anambra elections and urged the ones aggrieved to participate in the supplementary elections and, if they were still dissatisfied, to go to court.
The following was stated:
“We do not think cancelling the whole exercise will be the right move because, like it or not, tax payers foot the bills. So, we agree you have the right to be aggrieved, but since areas with very obvious problems have been listed for supplementary votes, they should participate."
Additionally, the Association urged the political parties to ensure that they conducted proper voters’ education prior to elections.
According to their claims, Nigeria should not allow what happened in Anambra to repeat itself in the 2015 election.
