A Psychology lecturer in the University of Lagos, Mr Dan Ekere has criticized the deadlocked meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He shared his views today at the Channels Television program Sunrise Daily.
He scolded the Head of the Implementation Committee of the Needs Assessment Report and the Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, for given promises to end strike soon but, Ekera argues, never delivering on them:
"Each time we hear Gabriel Suswan after the meeting come out and tell us there is hope, they will soon call off, I don’t know whether he is the one who will call the strike off.” “So far there has not been any meaningful made,” he added.
Ekere also found its paradoxical that the two parties had not agreed upon the finances before signing the agreement, and queried the FG for asserting that “this agreement predated this government” wondering “if government is no longer in continuum”.
He kept on arguing that ASUU is fighting the government to “make the system work so that the state to be sound”. Ekere also stated that there should not be any basis for any strike if the FG passes the 2009 agreement entered into, noting that “no academic is interested in strike”. However, he disclosed that the agreement provides room for a re-negotiation.
ASUU has been on a indefinite strike nationwide since 1 July 2013. The Union stated that the FG has not been following the law that entered into force in 2009 that guarantees a N12,500 monthly allowance to each lecturer. The conflict escalated when on Tuesday, 13 August, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the government simply has no resources to meet the union demands.
