Nigerian Army Recover Boko Haram Video Recordings

Major General Chris Olukolade, the director of Defence Information, has confirmed that the Nigerian Army has recovered video recordings of the villainous crimes committed by the Boko Haram terrorists.<br />
<br />
However, Olukolade refused to disclose further information about the video, The Punch reports.<br />
<br />
“It is true that troops have captured some video recordings of the terrorists but I would not want to say anything on that for now,” he said.<br />
<br />
Olukolade also confirmed that the videos recovered from the Boko Haram insurgents were being analysed by the military.<br />
<br />
“A number of vital materials, apart from arms and ammunition, have been recovered which are being subjected to intelligent analyses. We don’t want to say much about that now,” Olukolade said.<br />
<br />
Journalists’ investigation revealed that the videos have scenes of trials, stoning of condemned people to death, amputations, beheading of victims with knives, and summary execution through shooting.<br />
<br />
It was also learnt that the Joint Investigating Panel of the security agencies had started investigation of the terrorists’ activities and would soon present those found to be culpable of these heinous acts for trial.<br />
<br />
The videos were reportedly being prepared for posting on YouTube to create fear in the civil populace.<br />
<br />
“Some of the video were meant for release through their normal channels to the public before they were dislodged from their camps. They also show the barbaric life in their so-called caliphate.<br />
<br />
“The media and the public are advised to be careful in handling or sharing sensitive and offensive videos depicting atrocities that some viewers may find disturbing,” military said.<br />
<br />
Meanwile, members of the Boko Haram sect are continuing their bloody aggression.<br />
<br />
At least one person has been confirmed dead and 7 others sustained different degree of injuries as a suicide bomber attacked the College of Administrative and Business Studies in Potiskum, Yobe State on Friday.<br />

Nigerian Soldiers Retreat From Boko Haram Stronghold, Sambisa Forest

Reports indicate that Nigerian soldiers have retreated from the last known Boko Haram stronghold, Sambisa forest, where they said was booby-trapped after three pro-government vigilantes were killed by a landmine.<br />

<br />
According to Reuters, vigilante and a security source both confirmed the pullback from the forest, a day after an offensive aimed at rooting out the insurgents.<br />
<br />
"The soldiers have retreated to Bama because of mines. They had been on the road but that made them vulnerable, so they moved to the bush but there are mines planted there (too)," one soldier, who did not want to be named, told Reuters.<br />
<br />
The Sambisa forest, a former colonial game reserve, is about 100 km (60 miles) from the village of Chibok, from where Boko Haram abducted more than 200 secondary school girls a year ago.<br />
<br />
Intelligence officials believed they were being held in the forest, but U.S. reconnaissance drones failed to locate them.<br />
<br />
"Three of our boys were killed by a landmine as we progressed into Sambisa. We've suspended going farther," Muhammad Monguno, a member of a pro-government vigilante, told Reuters<br />
<br />
A.Chadian military source said a joint military operation involving armies from Niger and Cameroon was expected to begin to encircle the Sambisa forest next week. Chadians will go in from the Cameroonian border where they have been massing troops.<br />
<br />
Over the last six years, Boko Haram have killed thousands and kidnapped hundreds in a battle to establish an Islamic caliphate.<br />

 “His Excellency, the President-elect is still waiting to be sworn in on May 29. After the ceremony, he would need time to study the security situation and plan strategically with the security chiefs as to the way forward. Time is of essence here.Therefore, President Buhari didn’t and wouldn’t peg the decimation of terrorism from the country’s territories to just two months.<br />

The General was unequivocal about cleansing Boko Haram from our land; he would do a good job of it by giving a final, permanent push to rid Nigeria of unscrupulous elements. “The President-elect said that much to the world media including the British Broadcasting Corporation and Cable News Network.He never put a time-frame to when he would eliminate terrorists. It would be unfair and mischievous for someone to ascribe to him what he hasn’t said.”<br />

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has vowed to disrupt Nigeria's general election in a new video released Tuesday, after two suicide attacks in the northeast blamed on the Islamists killed 38 people.<br />
"This election will not be held even if we are dead. Even if we are not alive Allah will never allow you to do it," Shekau said in the Hausa language, presumably referring to the polls scheduled for March 28.<br />
According to AFP, the video appeared to be the first message released by the group on Twitter, a sign<br />
of its changing media tactics after previous messages were distributed to journalists on DVD.<br />
<br />
Shekau was shown in unusual clarity in front of a solid blue background, dressed in black and with an automatic weapon resting to his right.<br />
<br />
He also claimed a weekend attack in the northeast Nigerian city of Gombe, which the military says was repelled.<br />
<br />
The Islamist leader, declared a global terrorist by the United States and sanctioned by the United Nations, disputed the military's account of the Gombe clashes, claiming that his fighters overran troops and freed insurgents from prison.<br />
<br />
Nigeria's general election had been scheduled for February 14 but was postponed by six weeks, with the security services saying they needed more time to contain the violence in the northeast, Boko Haram's stronghold.<br />
<br />
Despite Shekau's threat, experts doubt that the Islamist rebels have the capacity to disrupt voting nationwide, although election officials have conceded that voting could prove impossible in parts of the northeast.<br />
<br />

A Boko Haram leader may have been killed during air strikes against the insurgents in the Northeast by Nigerian and Allied forces, it was learnt yesterday.<br />
                        Members of the allied forces are Chad, Niger and Cameroon who are Nigeria’s neighbours.<br />
But the authenticity of the reported killing of the sect’s chief is being investigated by military authorities.<br />
The sect leader is said to be one of the senior officers in Boko Haram command during the tenure of the late Mohammed Yusuf, founder of the group.<br />
<br />
                Besdies, the military has recovered deadly weapons from the insurgents in Baga. They include armoured tanks, artillery guns, and many Toyota Hilux vans.<br />
Military source said troops have recaptured six towns from the insurgents. These are Gamboru-Ngala, Malamfatori, Abadam, Kirawa,  Ashigashiya and Michika.<br />
<br />
The battle to liberate Gwoza, Gulak and others was ongoing yesterday.<br />
According to military sources, the battle to sack Boko Haram from the Northeast has assumed a large-scale dimension.<br />
The sources claimed that many camps and cells of the insurgents had been razed down through heavy air strikes.<br />
<br />
One of the sources said a top Boko Haram leader was feared killed in one of the air strikes.<br />
The highly-placed source said: “As the battle to annihilate Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast parts of the country intensifies with Nigerian troops in conjunction with allied forces from neighbouring countries gaining the upper hand, there is suppressed excitement about the reported death of a top ranking leader of the terrorists operating in the region.<br />
<br />
“Commanders at the frontline reported that the leader was a casualty of the ongoing heavy air bombardment from warplanes while clearing the way for the ground troops of multinational task force to move into some towns near one of the borders.<br />
Director of Defence Information Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade declined to give details on the killing of the top Boko Haram leader.<br />

He simply said: “As far as we are concerned, anybody that is associated with terrorism is a target and right now, we have a task of cleaning up the entire Boko Haram – infested region and returning peace to the country.”<br />
<br />
One of the leaders of Boko Haram whose death has been controversial is Abubakar Shekau.<br />
On 19 August 2013, the Joint Task Force (JTF) announced his death.<br />
They claimed he died of gunshots wounds received in an encounter with the JTF in one of their camps in Sambisa Forest on June 30, 2013.<br />
Many months later, Shekau re-emerged to dispute the claim of his death.<br />
But the military disputed the re-emergence of Shekau by claiming that the man in the video was allegedly “having different mannerisms, gait and character from the original Shekau”.<br />

The Federal Government has raised alarm today over plans by the Boko Haram sect to attack polling units during this month’s general election. It said the sect has perfected plans to collect, buy or steal the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) of female voters, give them to female suicide bombers to pave way for them to carry out their deadly activities during the elections.<br />

The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, stated this while briefing journalists alongside security officers at the centre in Abuja. He urged Nigerians, especially female voters to be mindful of their PVCs to ensure that they don’t get into the hands of bad elements.<br />
“By this information, therefore, Nigerians, especially female voters, are warned to remain vigilant and also jealously guard and preserve their PVCs to avoid the possibility of their being lost to these bad elements who will put them to untoward uses,” he said.<br />
Speaking on the 7,500 African Union-backed multinational force, Omeri said the force is composed of troops from countries in the Lake Chad Basin Commission areas.<br />

Files on the US State Department of Justice claim he variously operates under identities that include Darul Tawheed, Abu Bakr Skikwa, Imam Abu Bakr Shiku, Abu Muhammad Abu Bakr Bin Muhammad Al Shakwi Al Muslimi Bishku and Abubakar Shakkau.<br />

Shekau is believed to have a wife and three children, although their whereabouts also remain unknown.<br />

The Nigerian military has claimed several times to have killed the fanatic - only for him to appear in new videos proving he is still alive.After one recent claim, he appeared in video to taunt the military's claims and laughed:<br />

Boko Haram – which means ‘Western education is forbidden' in Arabic – have shocked the world with their merciless slaughter of innocent men, woman and children across the north of Nigeria.<br />
Shekau claimed leadership of the terror group in 2010, and was seen last week in a video praising the jihadists who murdered 17 people in the Paris attacks.<br />

He has been variously described as ‘fearless’, a ‘gangster’ and a ‘loner’, which security sources believe give him an air of invincibility which makes him extremely dangerous.<br />
The Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium has described Shekau as a ‘religious intellectual, yet also a gangster and vigilante as well as a mad leader’.<br />

“He was an easy-going fellow who would exchange banter with people in the neighbourhood. He was popular… as a local theology student,” said Grema Kawudima, from the Mafoni area of the city, in a September 2012 interview.Another local, Butari Gwoni said Shekau married the daughter of a teacher, but his wife died in childbirth, triggering what some said was latent mental illness. He began “exhibiting signs of mental imbalance” after his wife’s death, said Gwoni.<br />
Rumours also abound that Shekau escaped from the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri during the 1990s.<br />
The fanatic regularly appears in videos to taunt the Nigerian military over their failings to prevent his group’s killings.<br />

In one of Shekau's first videos, believed to have appeared online in 2012, the insurgent leader boasted of his bloodlust and said:<br />
‘I enjoy killing...the way I enjoy slaughtering chickens and rams.’<br />
It is believed the terrorist was born in Shekau village that borders Niger to poor farmer parents. They are then thought to have migrated south into northeast Nigeria.<br />

A religious young man, he studied basic Islamic theology, before focusing on more hardline Sunni ideology and becoming a preacher.<br />
After his religious studies, he is then understood to have attended Borno State College of Legal and Islamic Studies for higher studies on Islam.<br />
<br />
He became increasingly radicalised and seized control of Boko Haram after founder Mohammed Yusuf was killed in a security crackdown on the terror group in 2009.<br />
Since then, Shekau has pursued a relentless campaign of terror as the group has strengthened its deadly grip in Nigeria.<br />

Boko Haram fighters killed a woman as she was in labour during what is feared could be the deadliest attack in the militants’ six-year insurgency, Amnesty International claimed on Thursday.<br />

The human rights group said one witness to the assault on Baga, on the shores of Lake Chad in northeast Nigeria, told them the woman was shot by indiscriminate fire that also cut down small children. “Half of the baby boy (was) out and she died like this,” the unnamed witness was quoted as saying. Amnesty said this week that hundreds of people, if not more, may have been killed in the attack, which began on January 3 and is thought to have targeted civilian vigilantes helping the military.<br />

“They killed so many people. I saw maybe around 100 killed at that time in Baga. I ran to the bush. As we were running, they were shooting and killing,” a man in his fifties was quoted as saying. Another woman added: “I don’t know how many but there were bodies everywhere we looked.” The testimony chimes with claims from local officials that huge numbers were killed and that of witnesses spoken to by AFP, who described seeing decomposing bodies littering the streets.<br />

Fighting continued on Friday for Baga, a Nigerian town on the border with Chad, where Islamic extremists seized a key military base on 3 January and attacked again on Wednesday.<br />
Meanwhile, hundreds of bodies remain strewn in the bush from the attack which Amnesty International suggested on Friday is the "deadliest massacre" in the history of Boko Haram.<br />
"Security forces have responded rapidly, and have deployed significant military assets and conducted airstrikes against
militant targets," Mike Omeri, the government spokesperson on the insurgency, said in a statement.<br />
District head Baba Abba Hassan said most victims are children, women and elderly people who could not run fast enough when insurgents drove into Baga, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles on town residents.<br />
"The human carnage perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists in Baga was enormous," Muhammad Abba Gava, a
spokesperson for poorly armed civilians in a defence group that fights Boko Haram, told The Associated Press.<br />
He said the civilian fighters gave up on trying to count all the bodies. "No one could attend to the corpses and even the seriously injured ones who may have died by now," Gava said.<br />
An Amnesty International statement said there are reports the town was razed and as many as 2 000 people killed.<br />
If true, "this marks a disturbing and bloody escalation of
Boko Haram's ongoing onslaught," said Daniel Eyre, Nigeria researcher for Amnesty International.</div>

Following the several defeats suffered by the Boko Haram terrorists in the hands of the Special Forces of the Nigerian military, some of the insurgents have lay down their arms and surrendered to the troops. Five members of insurgent group, Boko Haram, have reportedly surrendered their weapons to the Nigerian military in Konduga, Borno State.<br />

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) who revealed this on Sunday via its Twitter account, said the five members surrendered their weapons to soldiers on Saturday on the grounds that they could not endure the massive onslaught by troops.<br />

May God Help Us!, The Boko Haram insurgency is far beyond the problem of the North East people as families in other parts of the country are now equally battling the bitter taste of the sect’s rampaging activities. One of such is Alhaji Mustapha Oyeyinka who is now cursing the day he decided to relocate to Nigeria from Europe where his family has been doing fine. Today, he has not only lost his sight to the insurgents but live with an agonizing memory of seeing his wife raped along with other women almost on a daily basis for three months in one of the camps of the deadly sect in Kaduna State.<br />
<br />
Excited about his return to Nigeria, the victim sometime in February 2011 decided to take a trip to Kaduna with his wife, Rachael to attend a wedding ceremony. Unknown to him, that trip will alter his destiny as they ended up in a Boko Haram camp where they spent three horrifying months.<br />
<br />
Enraged and bitter, the frustrated 50-year- old Oyeyinka said he has remained in hiding in Lagos since he regained his freedom and refused to tell his story because he was too terrified. He said he decided to open up now because he has made up his mind to return to his base in Spain in Europe where he expects a miracle to regain his sight. In an encounter with Saturday Sun, he told his sordid story.<br />
<br />
My story<br />
<br />
As a matter of policy, Oyeyinka, who hails from Abeokuta in Ogun State, ensured that he comes home from Europe regularly in an attempt not to forget his roots. “Shortly after my university days, I relocated to Europe in 1988, in search of business opportunities. I was into importation and exportation of goods to and from Europe. I never wanted to forget my root hence I invested in Nigeria. I made it a matter of policy to always return to Nigeria and spend some months.<br />
<br />
“As usual, we returned to Nigeria in November 2011 on a long vacation. The plan was to gradually relocate our children down to Nigeria, so that they will not forget their roots. It was also an opportunity to audit our investments and in February 2012, one of my friends invited us over to Kaduna for his wedding.<br />
<br />
“I was so excited and my kids pleaded that they wanted to be a part of that trip. I refused because I wanted to use this as an opportunity to hang out with my wife alone. It was also an opportunity to return to the North and see how it had developed. In the early 90s, I used to buy goods from Saudi Arabia and sell them in Ilorin and Kano. I had a lot of friends in Kano.”<br />
<br />
According to Alhaji Oyeyinka, his friend made arrangement for a mini bus that will convey them to and from Kaduna. The trip was very smooth till they got to Kaduna. “I do not know the village, but I know that it’s Kaduna because there was a billboard that had the address on it. We ran into a little traffic jam caused by some men who were in military uniform. They were stopping vehicles and searching them. When it got to our turn, they asked us to get down. The driver asked us to relax, as it was a routine.<br />
<br />
“I later discovered that the soldiers were not wearing boots and some were smoking. I waved that observation aside since it was in a bush. I assumed that they were tired of wearing boots for hours. Suddenly, there were gunshots; people started lying down on the floor while some were shouting Jesus! Jesus! In a split of seconds, they shot all those who they heard shouting Jesus. It was then that it dawned on me that these were no robbers.”<br />
<br />
Terrified and quietly praying for divine intervention, Alhaji Oyeyinka laid on the ground alongside others who survived the shooting. Minutes later, a truck emerged from the bush and they were asked to step into the truck. “We were more than 50 that were packed in the open truck and the rest in another truck. They drove into the bush and at a point stopped and blindfolded everyone. Everyone was silent, except for the loud voice of our captors who kept speaking Arabic language. I am a Muslim scholar, and understand the language  although I cannot speak. I was more terrified wondering if they were Talibans. After driving about 50 kilometres, they stopped and asked us to get down from the truck. Our blindfolds were removed.<br />
<br />
“We found ourselves in a camp built with mini halls which later turned out to be our detention room. There were so many young men. It was then that they told us in Hausa that they are Boko Haram members. I don’t understand Hausa, so some of us helped to interpret what they were saying. They collected our phones, and asked us to strip down including the women.<br />
<br />
“They asked if there is anyone related to the president or any influential Nigerian. Those who said yes were immediately slaughtered and their bodies taken away. Those who claimed that they were Christians were also killed if they failed to renounce their religion. I told them that I am a practising Muslim and they asked me if I was ready to kill for Allah. I kept quiet and the leader of the group said that with time I would beg to join them.<br />
<br />
“It was then that I said never and one of them hit me on the head with his gun. I fainted and woke up later in an open hall with my hand and feet tied up. We were kept in that room without food until the next day when they came and took all the women out including my wife.<br />
<br />
“They returned them two hours later. It was then my wife told me that they were raped by more than five men each. It was terrible, I couldn’t help my wife but I was consoled that she was still alive. Every day, they will come and carry all the women out to be raped and those who did not come back were slaughtered because they resisted. It was terrible knowing that every day different kind of men will forcefully have sex with your wife and you cannot do anything about it.”<br />
<br />
He also claimed that they were only fed with beans, once in a day. “Initially, we were only drinking water and a can of juice. It was days later that they announced that food has arrived and asked if there was anyone in our midst that can cook. Two persons volunteered and they were taken to the kitchen every day to prepare beans. It was always half done and the excuse that was given is that they do not have enough firewood to cook beans”.<br />
<br />
The escape<br />
<br />
Days turned into weeks and weeks into months. Alhaji Oyeyinka, who could barely see again, waited endlessly for a messiah. “Then I had completely lost my sight. The after effect of that gun on my head was blindness. I was lucky that my wife was with me to attend to me if need be. On May 8, 2011, the camp remained deserted because they had gone out to hunt. One of the guards came to our cell and picked the prettiest woman among the women. For fear that his people might see him; he shifted her to the end of the hall and had sex with her there. She was just screaming. While he was at it, we heard the sound of the truck, and he quickly ran out of the hall and forgot to lock the cell. They all jumped into the truck and drove off.<br />
<br />
“We waited till everywhere was really quite and took off into the bush. My wife was there to assist me since I could no longer see. We only left a young girl who was too weak behind. She was young and beautiful, so sometime they will come for her more than once in a day. It was a survival of the fittest, so we left her behind.<br />
<br />
“We got to a point and a Fulani woman who was fetching firewood asked us to follow her. She took us to their village head where we were given food and clothes. He also made an arrangement for a vehicle to take us to Kaduna town. We took the next bus down to Lagos.”<br />
<br />
Plans to regain sight<br />
<br />
Ever since, they escaped from Boko Haram camp, Alhaji Oyeyinka is yet to regain his sight. “Initially, I thought that I was still suffering from the after effect of the gun that was hit on my face. I got the shock of my life when I was told that I am permanently blind. I have visited different hospitals in Nigeria and the story is the same. I am not losing hope that I will regain my sight. I will soon travel back to Europe where I hope to get my sight back. I have already started selling off every of my investments. I do not want to have anything to do with Nigeria again. I am telling my story, not for anyone to pity me but to draw the attention of Nigerians who are planning to go to the North to beware”.<br />
<br />
Our plight, our destiny— Wife<br />

Collaborating her husband’s story, Mrs. Rachael Oyeyinka who still looks visibly shaken said that it was God that destined that they will survive the abduction. “They took turns to r*pe all the women. I cannot count the number of times but every day. Some of the women got pregnant, and they were given concoctions to drink and flush it out. So many of the women who resisted were killed. If you are very pretty, they will initially reserve you for their leader. As soon as he gets another replacement, he will push the woman out for general use. It was bad and I remained strong because I had children who still need their mother. Today, my husband is blind but we strongly hope that he will regain his sight.<br />
<br />
“I can’t wait to get out of this country. We are based in Spain and because my husband wanted to relocate some of the kids to Nigeria, we returned about three years ago. The plan was for them to go into boarding house, while our relatives will serve as guardians.”<br />
<br />
Continuing, she said: “They forced a lot of Christians to denounce their religion. You don’t need anyone to tell you to claim to be a Muslim. This was the only way you can survive.”<br />
