A recording of the telephone call by President Goodluck Jonathan to Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on March 31, congratulating him on his victory at the last Saturday’s presidential election hit the Internet on Thursday. The recording revealed what transpired between the two leaders.<br />
<br />
Many said it was this gesture by Jonathan that put paid to the fear that violence might erupt across the country in the event that the result of the election was rejected by whoever was declared the loser by INEC.<br />
According to the audio, the following conversation ensued between Jonathan and Buhari:<br />
<b>Jonathan’s aide:</b> Your Excellency, Sir.<br />
<b>Buhari’s aide:</b> Good evening.<br />
<b>Jonathan’s aide:</b> Hope I’m speaking with General Buhari, sir.<br />
<b>Buhari’s aide:</b> Yes.<br />
<b>Jonathan’s aide:</b> Ok, President Goodluck Jonathan will like to speak with you, sir.<br />

Five Reasons Why Jonathan Lost - BBC

Nigerians are so used to the idea that an incumbent should win presidential elections that President Goodluck Jonathan's failure to beat Gen Muhammadu Buhari needs some explaining. Here are five reasons why the opposition won:<br />
<br />
1: Harder to rig<br />
Past elections have been marred by serious irregularities and suspicions of rigging. In 2007 observers said the presidential poll was not "credible". In 2011 the vote was considered to be better run but observers said that rigging and fraud still took place.<br />
<br />
This time the electoral commission took more steps to prevent rigging, including new biometric voters cards.<br />
<br />
Also President Jonathan's party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), had lost control of some key states which meant it could not control the electoral process there.<br />
<br />
2: Boko Haram and security<br />
<br />
The Nigerian army has made some recent gains against Boko Haram, but not enough to convince Nigerians.<br />
<br />
The election took place against the background of an Islamist insurgency in the north-east of the country. The Boko Haram militant group has killed 20,000 people and forced some three million others from their homes and President Jonathan was criticised for not getting to grips with this.<br />
<br />
The poll was delayed for six weeks to give time for the security situation to improve, but even though most areas controlled by Boko Haram were recaptured, it seems to have come too late for many people.<br />
<br />
3: United opposition, crumbling PDP<br />
<br />
The extra six weeks of vigorous campaigning by the PDP was not enough to halt the slide in the party's fortunes.<br />
<br />
The PDP has been described as an election-winning machine. When it was created it united a northern elite with leading politicians from the south, but that alliance has broken up and the party lost some key figures. Even former President Olusegun Obasanjo came out against Mr Jonathan.<br />
<br />
At the same time, the opposition managed to unite under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner. The last six weeks of desperate and dirty campaigning, in which the APC responded in kind, was not enough to turn the tide.<br />
<br />
4: Economy<br />
<br />
Nigeria's economy is growing but the wealth is not being spread around<br />
Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer and its largest economy, but many fail to feel the benefits with nearly half the population living below the poverty line. Continued corruption is seen as partly being to blame.<br />
<br />
National income is due to grow by more than 5% this year and next year, but people did not seem in the mood to thank Mr Jonathan for this.<br />
<br />
<br />
5: Time for a change<br />
<br />
APC supporters chanted "change" wherever they went and it seems to have caught the mood. The PDP has been in power since the end of military rule in 1999, and 2015 is the year that Nigerians decided that someone else should have a go at sorting things out.<br />

I Regret My Action, Says Orubebe

Former Niger Delta Affairs Minister Elder Godsday Orubebe last night apologised for his during the release of elections results in Abuja. He regretted that he allowed his emotion to betray him.<br />
<br />
He pleaded with Niger Delta youths not to perpetrate violence because of the election of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
<br />
Orubebe, who held up proceedings for about 30 minutes, told reporters in Abuja: ”Election is a passionate thing and I really regret what took place this morning. I was unnecessarily pushed by Jega to get to that level.<br />
<br />
“I want to apologise particularly to young Nigerians that look up to take politics as a career to say that what happened was not intended to cause them any embarrassment.<br />
<br />
“To Nigerians generally, I regret my actions as even an elder in the church, and a leader, the young men expected to see a lot from me and I believe that if there was any disappointment they got from me I apologise to Nigerians and to the youths of this country.”<br />
<br />
A sober Orubebe asked Niger Delta youths not to take the laws into their hands on the outcome of the Presidential Election.<br />
<br />
“We have always talked about peace in this country and remember that when there was crisis in the Niger Delta, I was one of the architects that sacrificed to got the creeks to tell the militants that we need peace in this country alongside President Goodluck Jonathan.”<br />
<br />
On President Goodluck Jonathan’s sportsmanship attitude, he said: “Two things are in place. The president is the president of everybody. As a statesman and as a president; he has done what he should do.”<br />
<br />
On how the PDP will take the defeat, Orubebe said: “I cannot decide for the PDP. It is a large family. We were sent on an errand to come back to report. We will go and report to the party and the party will take the necessary action it has to take.<br />
<br />
“You remember what happened in Ekiti’s governorship election when the governor congratulated his opponent and the party went back and said this is what they have seen. The candidate is not the party, he is a candidate and he has acted very well as a statesman, and as the president, the father of all. For us, we are agents to be here to see what transpired here and give report to them.”<br />

Fayose ‘salutes’ Buhari, accepts poll results (See!)

Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti state and one of the arrowheads of President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign, has congratulated Muhammadu Buhari, describing the outcome of the presidential election as the will of God. Fayose famously raised health concerns over Buhari and engaged in an acrimonious media campaign against the retired general.<br />
<br />
With results of the election showing Buhari taking an unassailable lead on Tuesday afternoon, Fayose issued a statement, saying “the election result is the will of God and Nigerians , and all lovers of peace, progress and development of Nigeria must accept it”. The governor said the election results should not been seen as victory or loss for any political party, adding:<br />
<br />
“To me, Nigerians and democracy won.” Fayose said: “I salute Nigerians, especially the great people of Ekiti state. “I salute President Jonathan for laying the most solid foundation for democracy in Nigeria. And I salute Major General Buhari for being a resilient and dogged fighter.<br />
 “I urge Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation to respect the outcome of the election in the interest of peace, progress and development of the country.<br />
<br />
 “Nigeria as a country is greater than any individual or group and it is my plea that no one should do anything to rock the boat of peace in the country.”<br />

#Nigeriadecides: Military aids electoral fraud – Okorocha

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has frowned on the way the Peoples Democratic Party “rigged” the elections of Saturday and has therefore called for the outright cancellation of the results in six local government areas of the state.<br />
<br />
He also said that the election in the state was full of combined conspiracy with military intervention.<br />
<br />
The governor, who addressed journalists on Monday at the Government House, Owerri, accused notable chieftains of the PDP in the state of using the military to terrorise voters.<br />
<br />
<br />
He alleged that such areas as Oru East, Ohaji/Egbema, Ngor Okpala, Aboh Mbaise and parts of Owerri West did not only witnessed unprecedented rigging but also abduction and kidnapping of agents of rival political parties who were manhandled and forced to lie prostrate on the ground by soldiers acting on the orders of the Federal Government.<br />
<br />
He said, “Armed soldiers were used by the PDP as aides to the collation officers and there was no collation of results at the ward levels as prescribed by the Electoral Act. All the collating officers and presiding officers were directed to go and submit their results at the LG level, from where they collected all the results from the booths in the presence of soldiers.”<br />
Okorocha also lashed out at security agents who he alleged barred agents of the opposition parties from entering into the INEC office while giving those of the PDP unfettered access to the premises of the electoral commission.<br />
<br />
The governor also said that 250 students of the Rochas Foundation College who duly registered for the election and were issued with PVC, were arrested and held hostage at Ogboko on what he called trumped-up charges and were prevented from voting by soldiers working for the PDP.<br />
<br />
“Most of these helpless children are orphans and I am their father, they duly registered for the election but soldiers arrested, humiliated and detained them without food and water and they were not released until the following day being Sunday.”<br />
<br />
Okorocha insisted that election did not take place in the Isiala Mbano area and parts of Aboh Mbaise. He expressed shock that results were still announced in these areas by INEC.<br />
<br />
The governor also denied allegations of tearing result sheets and added that his convoy was shot at by security agents during which one of the boys in his entourage was seriously wounded and immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre,  Owerri<br />

 The Buhari Support Organisations has called for the arrest of Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, the Director, Media, Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, for announcing unofficial results.<br />
<br />
The Director, Media and Information of the BSO, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, made the call on Monday in Abuja at a news conference.<br />
<br />
According to Maduekwe, this is the time for security agencies to show their neutrality by arresting Fani-Kayode because the only authority to announce election results is the Independent National<br />
Electoral Commission.<br />
<br />
The organisation claimed that Fani-Kayode had breached relevant sections of the Electoral Act by announcing on Sunday that the PDP was leading in the presidential election in 23 states of the federation.<br />
“We ask the security agencies to immediately arrest Fani-Kayode for breaching relevant sections of the Electoral Act which forbids any organ outside INEC from officially declaring election results.<br />
“His arrest for further questioning will be a clear indication that the security agencies are truly unbiased participants in this electoral process.<br />
“His declaration is also a breach of both the first and second Abuja Peace Accord signed by the presidential candidates,’’ Maduekwe said.<br />
He called on the international community and observers to note the steps being taken by the ruling party to cause severe breach of peace and call them to order.<br />
<br />
He urged APC supporters to maintain the peace as they await the official announcement of authentic INEC results for the Saturday elections.<br />
“We ask Nigerians to join us in saying `No’ to this recent manifestation of habitual impunity. We appeal to all our numerous supporters to sustain their calmness in the face of current provocation and abuse of our electoral processes,’’ he said.<br />
Maduekwe said that APC would reject “in its entirety, the use of security to compromise an election process that has been commended as having high quotient of integrity’’. He urged INEC to adhere strictly to guidelines for elections which protected candidates through active participation of party agents.<br />
“We request INEC to adhere to the guideline which makes it mandatory for polling unit party agents to sign result sheet forming the basis for collation of reslt at collation centres.<br />

The presidential election results for 18 states plus the FCT has so far been announced. The APC has 10 states, while PDP has 8 states plus the FCT, Abuja. It's a very tight race.<br />
<br />
So far APC is leading with 8,520,436 votes while PDP has 6,488,210 votes.<br />

The election result announcement has ended for today. The commission has reconvened till 10am today.<br />

Lagos—Early results in Lagos State indicate that the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, is winning Lagos by a wide margin.<br />
<br />
Results collated in different polling units revealed that Buhari defeated Jonathan in the ward of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and the PDP governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje. In Obanikoro’s ward, polling unit 013, Gerald, Ikoyi, Buhari scored 62 to defeat Jonathan, who polled 38.<br />
<br />
In Agbaje’s ward in Apapa, Buhari polled 127 votes to beat Jonathan, who scored 60 votes.<br />
At polling unit CPU 032 in Ifako Ijaiye, Buhari won by scoring 83 as against Jonathan’s 77 votes.<br />
<br />
In Agege Local Government Area, Ward 11, unit 006, Buhari led Jonathan by 23 to 10 while in polling unit 007 in the same ward, Buhari won by 130 to Jonathan’s 69 votes.<br />
<br />
In polling unit 009, Ward II, Agege, Buhari won by scoring 117 votes, while Jonathan polled 71. At polling unit 010, ward II, Buhari defeated Jonathan by scoring 139 votes as against Jonathan’s 81.<br />
<br />
In Ward II, unit 011, Buhari won by 95 against Jonahan’s 35 votes. Likewise, in polling unit 012, ward II, Agege, Buhari won by 66 votes as against 54 polled by Jonathan.<br />
<br />
In the ward of the PDP Lagos Governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje, Buhari won by a landslide, polling 127 votes as against 60 scored by Jonathan.<br />
<br />
In polling unit 047, Bola Tinubu’s ward in Alausa, Buhari polled 180 votes while Jonathan scored 55.<br />
<br />
In polling unit 008, Ward C, Buhari scored 95 as against 55 polled by the president.<br />
<br />
In polling unit 003, Ikeja, Buhari polled 67 and Jonathan 58 while in polling unit 009, ward F, in Ikeja, Buhari also led Jonathan by 49 to 39 votes.<br />
<br />
Likewise, in polling unit 38, Ward B, Buhari defeated Jonathan by 75 to 53 votes while in polling unit 037, Alausa, Buhari led Jonathan by 82 to 28 votes.<br />
<br />
In polling unit 012, Ward C, Jonathan led Buhari by 69 to 65 votes and also in polling unit 5, in Ikeja, Jonathan defeated Buhari by 86 to 67 votes.<br />
<br />
In Ward G3, where Governor Babatunde Fashola voted, Buhari won by a landslide, scoring 317 votes as against 135 votes polled by Jonathan.<br />
<br />
The result in Unit 005, in Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Alimosho, showed that Buhari defeated Jonathan by polling 220 votes as against 137 polled by Jonathan.<br />

Prof. Wole Soyinka, has described the presidential and National Assembly elections as the most vicious, unprincipled, vulgar and violent he had ever witnessed.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Nobel Laureate in an interview with The Guardian UK on Sunday said that;<br />
<br />
“We’re talking about a very positive response by the public in terms of determination to register and vote but, you know, this has been one of the most vicious, unprincipled, vulgar and violent exercises I have ever witnessed.I just hope we won’t go down as being the incorrigible giant of Africa.<br />
 “This one was like a no-holds-barred kind of election, especially, frankly, from the incumbency side. One shouldn't be too surprised anyway given the kind of people who are manning the barricades for the incumbent candidate.<br />
“Most expensive, most prodigal, wasteful, senseless, I mean really insensitive in terms of what people live on in this country.<br />
<br />
“This was the real naira-dollar extravaganza, spent on just subverting, shall we say, the natural choices of people. Just money instead of argument, instead of position statements.<br />
<br />
“And of course the sponsoring of violence in various places, in addition to this festive atmosphere in which every corner, every pillar, every electric pole is adorned with one candidate or the other, many of them in poses which remind one of Nollywood.”<br />
 Soyinka, who told The Guardian how he was recently invited by President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss various issues, said<br />
, “We even discussed life after power, whenever that takes place.<br />
<br />
He further said that, “It was difficult for me to decide from his side how readily he might accept defeat. He absolutely swore that if he lost he was going back to Otuoke village. If I take him literally, I think he will accept the result, but I’ve learned never to trust any politician from here to there, even if they’re just coming out of communion. So I really don’t know.<br />
<br />
“I think Nigerians have had a very rough time over the last few years with Boko Haram and all kinds of insecurity, failure of governance and so on. I think we deserve to have this period as a period of comparative tranquility and peace of mind to reconstruct and address some really fundamental issues of society. So I really hope the result, however gracelessly or grudgingly, will be accepted by the loser.”<br />

The Lagos State Police  Command has arrested one  26-year-old pregnant Onyiyechi who allegedly stabbed her husband to death during a quarrel over who would emerge winner between the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidates, while voting was on-going , weekend, at Ejigbo area of the state.<br />
<br />
According to Vanguard, the incident which threw the neighbours into a mayhem, happened inside the couple's one room apartment at 82 Military zone junction at about 12 noon.<br />
While some said that the couple had conflicting opinion on their choice of presidential candidates, others said the wife disobeyed the husband.<br />
<br />
 It was gathered that husband was said to have decided to vote for the PDP,while the  wife, schose to vote for the presidential candidate of the APC.<br />
An argument ensued and in the process,  Onyiyechi allegedly stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife in the chest region.<br />
<br />

One of the neighbours said that, “ We were all outside waiting to vote when Onyiyechi rushed out, shouting for help. Out of curiosity, we all ran inside, only to discover blood all over the ground, on entering their apartment.<br />
On closer observation, we noticed that the blood was from her husband chest region. We met him on the ground. Before we could rush him to the hospital, he gave up the ghost.<br />
Perhaps, he would have survived the attack had Onyiyechi called for help early. From all indication, it was clear that she attempted to manage the situation immediately the incident occurred. It was when she discovered that the situation had overwhelmed her that she raised alarm.<br />

I do not know the name of her husband. We only know that of his wife, who we fondly call Onyiyechi.<br />
She has never beaten a little child, let alone to fight with any neighbor.<br />

Again on that day, we saw both of them together. They were seen sitting outside, one hour before the incident occurred. Policemen from Ejigbo later came to remove the corpse to the Isolo morgue”.<br />

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) defeated President Goodluck Jonathan in the elections conducted inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<br />
<br />
There are two polling units-Unit 021 and 022-located side-by-side within the premises of the seat of power.<br />
Buhari polled a total of 613 votes in the two polling units while Jonathan scored a total of 595 votes.<br />
At Unit 021, Jonathan beat Buhari to second position with 293 votes while the APC candidate scored 265 votes.<br />

At the second polling booth, Unit 022, Buhari emerged winner with 348 votes while Jonathan polled 302.<br />
For the Senatorial election in Unit 021, PDP polled 286 votes to beat APC with 260.<br />
In Unit 022, APC polled 337 votes while PDP scored 281 votes.<br />
For the House of Representatives election in Unit 022, APC polled 334 to beat PDP to distant second with 241 votes.<br />
For Unit 021 however, it was a close contest between APC that won with 255 votes and PDP that polled 254.<br />
<br />
A total of 575 voters were accredited out of the 2,181 registered voters for Unit 021 while 770 voters were accredited out of the 2,278 voters registered for Unit 022.<br />
The sorting and counting of the votes ran ended at 11.30pm, necessitating some voters to illuminate the venue with the headlamps of their cars.<br />
Meanwhile, Jonathan has returned to the Presidential Villa after casting his vote in his hometown, Otuoke, Bayelsa State.<br />
<br />
He was inside his official residence while the votes cast in the two units were being counted.<br />
He was said to have returned at about 8.30pm.<br />
