A recording of the telephone call by President Goodluck Jonathan to Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on March 31, congratulating him on his victory at the last Saturday’s presidential election hit the Internet on Thursday. The recording revealed what transpired between the two leaders.<br />
<br />
Many said it was this gesture by Jonathan that put paid to the fear that violence might erupt across the country in the event that the result of the election was rejected by whoever was declared the loser by INEC.<br />
According to the audio, the following conversation ensued between Jonathan and Buhari:<br />
<b>Jonathan’s aide:</b> Your Excellency, Sir.<br />
<b>Buhari’s aide:</b> Good evening.<br />
<b>Jonathan’s aide:</b> Hope I’m speaking with General Buhari, sir.<br />
<b>Buhari’s aide:</b> Yes.<br />

Five Reasons Why Jonathan Lost - BBC

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Nigerians are so used to the idea that an incumbent should win presidential elections that President Goodluck Jonathan's failure to beat Gen Muhammadu Buhari needs some explaining. Here are five reasons why the opposition won:<br />
<br />
1: Harder to rig<br />
Past elections have been marred by serious irregularities and suspicions of rigging. In 2007 observers said the presidential poll was not "credible". In 2011 the vote was considered to be better run but observers said that rigging and fraud still took place.<br />
<br />
This time the electoral commission took more steps to prevent rigging, including new biometric voters cards.<br />
<br />
Also President Jonathan's party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), had lost control of some key states which meant it could not control the electoral process there.<br />
<br />
2: Boko Haram and security<br />
<br />
The Nigerian army has made some recent gains against Boko Haram, but not enough to convince Nigerians.<br />
<br />
The election took place against the background of an Islamist insurgency in the north-east of the country. The Boko Haram militant group has killed 20,000 people and forced some three million others from their homes and President Jonathan was criticised for not getting to grips with this.<br />
<br />
The poll was delayed for six weeks to give time for the security situation to improve, but even though most areas controlled by Boko Haram were recaptured, it seems to have come too late for many people.<br />
<br />
3: United opposition, crumbling PDP<br />
<br />
The extra six weeks of vigorous campaigning by the PDP was not enough to halt the slide in the party's fortunes.<br />
<br />
The PDP has been described as an election-winning machine. When it was created it united a northern elite with leading politicians from the south, but that alliance has broken up and the party lost some key figures. Even former President Olusegun Obasanjo came out against Mr Jonathan.<br />
<br />
At the same time, the opposition managed to unite under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner. The last six weeks of desperate and dirty campaigning, in which the APC responded in kind, was not enough to turn the tide.<br />
<br />
4: Economy<br />
<br />
Nigeria's economy is growing but the wealth is not being spread around<br />
Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer and its largest economy, but many fail to feel the benefits with nearly half the population living below the poverty line. Continued corruption is seen as partly being to blame.<br />
<br />
National income is due to grow by more than 5% this year and next year, but people did not seem in the mood to thank Mr Jonathan for this.<br />
<br />
<br />
5: Time for a change<br />
<br />
APC supporters chanted "change" wherever they went and it seems to have caught the mood. The PDP has been in power since the end of military rule in 1999, and 2015 is the year that Nigerians decided that someone else should have a go at sorting things out.<br />

In a telephone call at exactly 5:15pm to Buhari in Abuja, Jonathan assured him of maximum cooperation and smooth transition.<br />
<br />
Jonathan has also called National leader of the APC, Senator Bola Tinubu to congratulate him on his party’s victory at the poll.<br />

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) defeated President Goodluck Jonathan in the elections conducted inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<br />
<br />
There are two polling units-Unit 021 and 022-located side-by-side within the premises of the seat of power.<br />
Buhari polled a total of 613 votes in the two polling units while Jonathan scored a total of 595 votes.<br />
At Unit 021, Jonathan beat Buhari to second position with 293 votes while the APC candidate scored 265 votes.<br />
<br />
At the second polling booth, Unit 022, Buhari emerged winner with 348 votes while Jonathan polled 302.<br />
For the Senatorial election in Unit 021, PDP polled 286 votes to beat APC with 260.<br />
In Unit 022, APC polled 337 votes while PDP scored 281 votes.<br />
For the House of Representatives election in Unit 022, APC polled 334 to beat PDP to distant second with 241 votes.<br />
For Unit 021 however, it was a close contest between APC that won with 255 votes and PDP that polled 254.<br />
<br />
A total of 575 voters were accredited out of the 2,181 registered voters for Unit 021 while 770 voters were accredited out of the 2,278 voters registered for Unit 022.<br />
The sorting and counting of the votes ran ended at 11.30pm, necessitating some voters to illuminate the venue with the headlamps of their cars.<br />
Meanwhile, Jonathan has returned to the Presidential Villa after casting his vote in his hometown, Otuoke, Bayelsa State.<br />
<br />
He was inside his official residence while the votes cast in the two units were being counted.<br />
He was said to have returned at about 8.30pm.<br />

“I am a very respectable young lady and I was not in any way trying to seduce the President with the outfit I wore. I had two outfits for the event, one was for my performance and the other was worn after I performed. The dress I was pictured in with the President was what I wore during my performance.</div>

“I came on stage and greeted everyone according to their culture and I did the same for Mr. President. He was impressed and he asked where and how I knew how to greet in his native dialect and I said I learnt it. That was what brought about the giggling and smiles in the picture. I’m a performer and what I do on stage doesn’t reflect my everyday life. I had two outfits on that day and it was a youth event. Who wouldn’t feel overwhelmed meeting the President? Well, I did and I felt honoured because it is not every day you get to meet the president of your country,” she said.</div>

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday, March 2, 2015 gave audience to Yvonne Ngede of Al-Jazeera, where he spoke on a number of issues, especially regarding the forthcoming election. Addressing the issue of rumours that he planned on sacking the Chairman of the independent National Electoral commission (INEC), President Jonathan said:</div>

“Except somebody is insinuating that the chairman has done something wrong, you cannot change an officer, except the person has done something wrong.</div>

“Government does not just wake up, whether at the federal or state level, president or governor, does not wake up and change somebody, especially INEC – a very sensitive body.</div>

“So for me to change INEC chairman, people, both Nigerians and non-Nigerians, would ask questions. You cannot just wake up and change INEC chairman; I have never discussed with any human being on earth about changing the INEC chairman.”</div>

When questioned on post election violence and what will happen if he loses the election, Mr. President said: “The country is not my father’s estate. If I lose the election, I will go to my village.”</div>

On corruption, President Jonathan stated thus: “Yes, people talk about corruption now because it has become political issue and when you promote something to the level of politics, it goes out of proportion.</div>

“I am not saying that Nigerians do not have this element of corruption. If you start from my former CBN governor who said $49.8 billion, what is Nigeria’s budget? If today we lose $49.8 billion, the next morning he said it was $12 billion, the following morning he said it was $20 billion. Till today, I don’t know the one to believe.</div>

“The senate set up a committee to investigate and they used a consultant and only fond out that $2 billion was not properly balanced. They did not say anybody stole it.”</div>

The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan in an interview with Al Jazeera yesterday in Lagos, said if he lost the presidential election on March 28, he would return to Otuoke, his hometown in Bayelsa State.</div>

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has said that he believes that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, who has killed thousands of Nigerians through the help of his men and suicide bombers, will be apprehended by government forces before Nigeria’s elections starting March 28.<br />
<br />
Mr. Jonathan disclosed this in an interview with Thisday newspaper on Friday in response to a question on what his government is doing about Shekau’s threat to disrupt the elections, ”God willing we will catch Shekau before the elections,” the president said.<br />

The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has said that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, President Goodluck Jonathan, will not secure the votes of the people of the state in next month’s presidential election due to what he described as the abandonment of the state.<br />
Oshiomhole argued that President Jonathan did not fulfil his promise to contribute to the development of the South-South state, despite enjoying 95 per cent of votes of Edo people for his re-election in 2011.<br />
<br />
The governor spoke at separate rallies of the All Progressives Congress in Ehor and Igueben, in Uhunmwode Igueben Local Government Area on Saturday. He explained that in spite of several letters to the Federal Government to assist the state on erosion challenges, the Jonathan administration neglected Edo after persuading them to vote for him as their brother in 2011.<br />
He, however, said that the people of the state had become wiser now and would “vote the President out on February 14, for abandoning them.”<br />
He said, “The last time, we voted for President Jonathan. He got 95 per cent of the total votes in Edo State. Yet, I cannot think of any meaningful thing he has done in the state.<br />
<br />
“Last year, President Jonathan gave N2bn each to some PDP states even where he lost election to deal with erosion. Those that don’t have flood erosion were given money for desertification but we in Edo State that voted for him got nothing. I am not lamenting this. We have learnt from it and are determined not to repeat our mistakes.”<br />
<br />
Oshiomhole also accused the Federal Government of failing to prosecute “those indicted” in the ill-fated immigration recruitment exercise in 2014, adding that it “is a clear indication that President Goodluck Jonathan did not care about the welfare of the Nigerian youths.<br />
“People lost their lives. Last week, the relatives of those who died in Benin were protesting to us that the Federal Government have not given them even the jobs they promised.”<br />
He, however, expressed confidence that Nigerians would vote for change at all levels in the country, adding that “I believe that with Maj. Gen. Buhari, Nigeria will be in a safer hand beginning with security.”<br />

Following speculations in some quarters that President Goodluck Jonathan did not complete his doctorate degree programme at the University of Port Harcourt, the institution has come out in his defence.<br />
<br />
The Uniport Deputy Registrar (Information), Dr. William Wodi, in a statement sent to SUNDAY PUNCH via electronic mail, described the rumour about the President’s educational qualification as baseless. He also explained that apart from acquiring his first degree in the institution, Jonathan also got his Masters and Ph.D in the same institution.<br />
“The authorities of the University of Port Harcourt are aware of rumours that are now spreading like harmattan fire over the doctoral degree status of President Goodluck Jonathan. The allegations have neither legs nor grounds to stand on and we hope that its purveyors will now rest in silence.<br />
<br />
For the avoidance of doubt, the authorities of the University wish to state without equivocation that Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, as he then was, was among 422 students, who matriculated in 1977. He was admitted into the then Department of Zoology, now Animal and Environmental Biology in the then School of Biological Sciences, now a Faculty in the new College of Natural and Applied Sciences.<br />
<br />
“At the end of a successful residency period, Jonathan was awarded the Bachelor of Science (Upper Division) in 1981. It was rumoured among students that the young university was reluctant to award the First Class to its pioneer class in an effort to consolidate its academic profile,” Wodi said.<br />
He said the President later enrolled into the postgraduate programme and obtained the Master of Science degree in Hydrobiology and Fisheries in 1985 and crowned his academic pursuit in the University with the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Zoology in 1995.<br />
<br />
“From the above account, it has become obvious that Dr. Jonathan successfully completed the prescribed courses and programmes as specified by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt to earn his degrees from the university.”<br />
Stressing that the university remains proud of Jonathan, Wodi advised any person or organisations in need of further information on the educational qualification of the President or any other student of the institution to contact authorities of the university.<br />
“We have absolutely nothing to hide as an institution that has a statutory mandate to advance the frontiers of knowledge,” Wodi added.<br />

The Obanema of Opume Kingdom in Bayelsa State, HRH King A.J. Turner has warned that Nigerians will regret if they reject President Goodluck Jonathan in the February presidential election out of sentiments of his tribe or religion.<br />
                          Playing host to a pro-democracy group, United Summit Friends Development Association (USFDA) in his Abuja residence on Thursday, King Turner said, “Nigerians will regret if they chase President Goodluck Jonathan out of office. They should vote him in next month’s presidential election for continuity of development.<br />
                  “But if they must chase Jonathan out of office, it shouldn’t be because of sentiments. It is quite a challenging time for Mr President and I will always support any cause that will promote President Jonathan’s re-election.<br />

ABUJA – PRESIDENTIAL Campaign Organisation, PCO, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  has accused the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, rtd of committing perjury, alleging that he (Buhari) lied on oath.<br />
<br />
Addressing Journalists, the Director of Media and Publicity of the campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode asked Buhari, to as a matter of urgency,  throw in the towel by withdrawing from the  presidential race.<br />
<br />
The PDP campaign Organisation spokesperson  also urged him to report to the nearest police station, adding that the Armed Forces must strip him of his ranks and privileges, stressed that with the papers on ground, General Buhari who rose to the rank of a Major-General and  became a head of state, was never qualified to enlist in the Nigerian army as a commissioned Officer, adding that if he fails to report to the Police, the PDP would then hand him over to God.<br />

Femi Fani-Kayode, whose speech was titled, ” And Buhari lies on Oath, said, “Information reaching us now has shown that the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed today in Kano at a press conference that the affidavit he swore to, in which he claimed that his credentials were in the custody of the military was not true after all.<br />
<br />
Recall that Buhari, at another press briefing Wednesday said; “I had assumed all along that all my records were in the custody of the Military Secretary of the Nigerian Army. Much to my surprise, we are now told that although a record of the result is available, there are no copies of the certificates in my personal file. This is why I formally requested my old school the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina (which is now known as Government College, Katsina) to make available the school’s copy of the result of the Cambridge/West African School Certificate. This will be made available to the press the moment this is available”.<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode continued, “The implication of the action of this so-called “Mr Clean” is nothing but perjury and we all know that this is a grave criminal offence under our laws and constitution.<br />
<br />
“We urge Buhari and his party to do the right thing, tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian people. He should throw in the towel and report to the nearest police station for interrogation and prosecution. Anything less than that would be an insult to the collective intelligence and integrity of the Nigerian people.”<br />

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign organisation has distanced itself from the controversial death-wish advertorial authored by the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose. Reacting to the advertisement on Tuesday, the Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP presidential campaign organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, said the views expressed in the publication were personal to Fayose. Fani-Kayode said, "Governor, Ayo Fayose is a distinguish leader of our party.<br />

A democratically elected governor and someone we have immense respect and affection for and he released this advert in his own name. "That represents his own personal opinion which he is entitled to. That is what I can tell you on our part as the Presidential campaign organisation.<br />

It does not represent the opinion of the Presidential Campaign Organisation or indeed the President, it is his opinion which he is entitled to. "I  have spoken with him and we respect him but for any body to suggest that this is the position of the presidential campaign organisation or President Goodluck Jonathan, that will be most unfair. If we wanted to say something like that, we will say it without any kind of apology but of course, .. but of course we will never say that because we believe in the sanctity of life and age is not a function of how long you will live ..it is important that we recognize the fact that age is not an indication of how long somebody will live."<br />
